"On Fire" dei Galaxie 500 ... una RIVELAZIONE

Un disco che sembrava perso nel tempo, ma che una volta scoperto è entrato di diritto tra i miei album fondamentali. Atmosfere rarefatte, malinconia che accarezza senza mai deprimere, e quella chitarra che sembra fluttuare fuori dal tempo.
Il paragone scaruffiano con i Velvet Underground è più che sensato. On Fire suona come se i VU si fossero risvegliati sotto l'effetto di un riverbero interminabile, intrappolati in un sogno malinconico: la voce eterea e la chitarra di Wareham accarezzano l’ascoltatore, il basso e la batteria scivolano come un battito cardiaco lento e ipnotico (vedi “Tell Me” o “Snowstorm”), la malinconia diventa contemplazione.
Non mi stupirei affatto se band come gli stratosferici Built To Spill, che amo per le loro chitarre stratificate e l’approccio introspettivo, si fossero ispirate proprio a questo sound: quel dream‑pop / slowcore artigianale ma potentissimo, che sembra costruito su silenzi e riverberi più che su note piene.
Un MUST HAVE soprattutto in vinile, di cui consiglio - a parte la stampa originale del 1989 purtroppo non a buon mercato - la versione del 2009 (20° anniversario) curata niente meno che da Kevin Gray (una garanzia).
Su CD consiglio la versione pubblicata da Rykodisc che contiene alcune tracce bonus tra cui una versione imperdibile del brano "Ceremony", una cover dei Joy Division / New Order (scritta originariamente da Ian Curtis poco prima della sua morte).

Also nice to see Scaruffi mentioned! I’ve been reading him on and off for many years and own his history of rock books. I’ve been meaning to ask as to whether people here know him at all; it’s an Italian forum after all.

It's funny you mention Scaruffi — to me, he's almost more American than Italian at this point! His perspective has always felt quite global, and definitely outside the mainstream. Personally, he's been a real point of reference: not just the website (which I've been reading for years), but I also own several of his books on music history.

Thanks to him, I discovered a whole world of music and incredible artists I probably would have never stumbled upon otherwise. Whether or not one always agrees with his opinions, I think his work opens doors — and that's invaluable.
